As a freelance yoga teacher, her ambition is to make the practice more inclusive and accessible to underserved communities such as people with reduced mobility, including those in wheelchairs.

Nerry will be giving two-day classes at Kite Beach for the Dubai Fitness Challenge (October 30 – November 28). “I start yoga for everyone. The yoga scene in the United Arab Emirates is flourishing, but people who are determined or with chronic illnesses have limited opportunities to learn yoga and benefit from its practice, ”she said.

Nerry explained her decision to teach yoga full-time, how the practice helped her during the pandemic, and her inclusive yoga mission.

She said City timetables, “While I have always felt comfortable with my career path (I was in public relations for almost twelve years), I found myself questioning my true purpose. You feel fulfilled when you see your customers on the front page, but what I’m doing right now is what I really wanted to do. Sometimes we feel so comfortable with financial stability that we never really try to do what we really love. I was fired during the pandemic. Sometimes situations make the decision for you and then it’s up to you to move it forward.

She admitted that she wanted to see herself doing “something meaningful, something bigger than me”.

In 2017, she started teaching yoga in her spare time, spreading the message of community practice. “I am now focusing on private lessons for individuals and groups. I also teach in companies,” she said.

How has the Covid affected its projects? “What the year 2020 has shown us is that nothing is really permanent. But when we open our hearts to the universe, it actually gives us a path. I was very excited to start as a full time yoga teacher and then shutdowns started happening due to Covid! During this time, what really helped me was my routine of meditation and breathing exercises every morning, my practice of asanas and therefore being mindful throughout the day. It helped me come to terms with the situation for what it is and move on.

Nerry said she would recommend yoga, especially during the Covid era, for its therapeutic benefits. “I find yoga very healing; it makes me feel very open and grounded. Yoga is widely known to reduce anxiety, improve flexibility, focus while promoting a sense of peace. Besides its physical benefits, research and studies also show its therapeutic benefits for mental health issues. You enter a more relaxed state and calm your nervous system.

Nerry, who currently only uses her PR skills for yoga and ethical brands, is passionate about inclusive yoga awareness. “I want to improve the lives of others and it shouldn’t be limited to able-bodied people. There are underserved communities that need the healing power of yoga. My goal at the moment is for this practice to be available and accessible to everyone, regardless of physical and mental limitations, gender, race, age.

She concluded, “I live my life according to my values. Everything I do now has to be in harmony with who I am, be it public relations or yoga. It is a life of purpose.”
