Children’s yoga instructor instills self-care stretching

MEET the West Cumbria children’s yoga instructor who seeks to instill a message of self-education from an early age.

Tamzin McCartney, from Whitehaven, has been teaching yoga for five years but has really found a home for her Buddhi yoga practice in primary schools in West Cumbria including; St Bees, St James, Jericho Primary and soon St Michael’s in Workington.

“I wasn’t very competitive in sports as a kid in school, a bit of a dreamer and a dancer, and I really could have done with something like that.

“I think that’s what got me into this, thinking that I can give the kids something that I needed,” she said.

Tamzin, who finds time to raise her own little one, said the kids really love the class, which makes it all the more special when they get something out of it.

PEACE: found in the courses of Tamzin with great pleasure.

“You see these children find this little pocket of peace, which is inside everyone.

“And when kids get a chance to breathe a little, they always want more,” she said.

The yoga instructor, who is also a born doula and Shakti dance instructor, said it was “very rare” not to see a child get something out of the class.

“For some kids, all is not well at home and with their mental health, so when you give them confidence and show them how to self-regulate and give them a bit of body and awareness, it just gives them that little bit extra. trust.

“We definitely bounce off each other too, and they inspire me.

“Some schools don’t have the budget to buy yoga mats, and we work in classrooms with limited space which can also be quite hot as summer approaches – so the plan is to collect funds and to obtain mat donations to schools that could benefit,” she said.

In line with this goal, for National World Yoga Day on June 23, Tamzin is orchestrating a Yoga Mala fundraising event at Jericho School, involving children in an event focused on endurance and strength.

The event hopes to raise awareness of the importance of self-care and well-being that can come from meditative practice, while raising funds for Papyrus – a charity that seeks to prevent youth suicide.

An initiative that Tamzin plans to pursue in the future to try and get other schools their own yoga mats.
