MIXING yoga with alpacas might seem like an unusual combination, but this yoga instructor is passionate about sharing the twice weekly experience and its benefits with others.
And it’s more than just a fad.
Rebecca Thomson, who returned to her roots in the Northwich area, has been teaching yoga for seven and a half years.
She puts all of her heart and soul into sharing the physical, mental and emotional benefits with anyone open enough to discover the capacity for self-healing.
She offers yoga classes at Riverside Organic Farm, located at Shipbrook Hill Farm, Davenham and Akesmere Farm in Little Budworth, in addition to working with adults of all ages with past trauma, addictions, anxiety, physical oppression and work strengthening, both within the business sector and on an individual basis.
This new twice-weekly yoga experience at Akesmere Farm has a team of fluffy four-legged residents on site waiting for company.
Classes are held on the farm regardless of the weather – either outdoors in the heart of the beautiful Cheshire countryside or in the shelter of one of the rustic barns – where these charismatic members of the Penwerris alpacas herd embrace the sessions with their curious nature.
When Rebecca was first approached by Akesmere Farm with the idea of ââ’alpaca yoga’, she realized how well the two fit together.
âI had researched and found that alpacas are just really spiritual animals, they have such a fun, yet calming and calming nature,â she said.
“Their nature is so different – you have to let them come to you, they are very sensitive to this energy which invites a very healing experience.
âWhen you do yoga around the alpacas, they respond to these movements and it’s a cute animal to share with people.
âYoga is energy and when you do yoga in nature there is something even deeper there – you connect with the stillness that surrounds you.
âWhen you add an animal to this connection, it just adds another element. ”
âFor me it’s so beautiful, and I just want to help people and share it with them.
Rebecca says yoga “found” her when she suffered from an eating disorder about 10 years ago.
She explained, âI am extremely grateful to my family and friends who have helped me on my healing journey.
âAt the end of 2013, I began a journey of self-discovery that began in Melbourne, Australia, where I stayed with my ‘fairy godmother’.
âFrom Melbourne, I was very lucky to have a month in Hong Kong with my brother and sister-in-law who are both inspiring teachers.
âI then took a leap of faith and traveled to Bali where I studied and qualified for my yoga teacher training with ‘Santosha Yoga’ in June 2014.
âSince then, I am now a proud wife and mom to my little girl and made the decision to devote my time to sharing and teaching my passion for yoga.
âI have always been an active person and since my illness exercise has had a positive effect not only physically but also mentally.
“Yoga increased my self-confidence and taught me the connection with my mind and body, helping me to feel more balanced and aware of myself and others.”
Classes are held at Riverside Organic on Mondays and Fridays.
Alpaca Yoga Flow at Akesmere Farm, Little Budworth, takes place Tuesdays and Saturdays at 10:30 am with an animal mindfulness workshop for children also on Tuesdays.
This is perfect for other adults who want to experience yoga on their own, but also for children who want to experience activities and have the chance to meet different animals up close every week.
This is followed by a group meeting with the alpacas.
Classes are open to people of all levels.
